Hey friends,

I’m so excited to be heading back into the studio in April to record a brand new album! I’ve been writing songs specifically for this project for the last year and a half, and I’VE NEVER BEEN MORE EXCITED about a musical vision for an album than I am for this particular one. These past 7 years have been a fun and crazy ride, and I can’t thank you all enough for propelling me to this point.

Little Drummer Boy

Last Sunday, I worked up a version of Little Drummer Boy to play at my church in Atlanta. I had recently heard a version of the song by Ray Charles that just knocked me off of my feet. I wanted to give it some of that Ray-Charles-goodness while still being true to myself, artistically. The band that accompanied me on the song is a talented crew of seasoned musicians (Jon Chalden-drums / Michael Westbrook-slide guitar / Kevin Cooke-bass,bgv / Sean Crawford-piano,bgv / NA-vocals,wurlitzer). They truly helped me bring the song to life.

The story of the Little Drummer Boy is a powerful one. I was struck by the awe and wonder of this boy. He hears the hype of a newborn king to see and goes to see for himself. On his journey, he realizes his own limitations (I am a poor boy too) and makes himself vulnerable: I have no gift to bring / that’s fit to give a king. After he acknowledges his inability to give a gift that is adequate, he is able to freely give what he has to give: Me and my drum. And he does just that. He gives.

I just love Christmas with all it’s joy, misery, awkwardness, hope, stress and child-like wonder:
-tacky Christmas sweaters
-awkward office parties
-a fat yet jolly old man
-countless hours spent with relatives
-lights
-over crowded malls
-a surplus of sugar intake
-a baby in a manger
-presents

Summer Tour

Trust Fall new song (video)

One of the most rewarding parts about being a songwriter is when you write a song and after a while it takes on a whole new meaning. This has certainly been the case with one of my songs – Trust Fall. I wrote it a few summers back on a writing trip to L.A. with Justin Gray. The song was always special to me, but a few life experiences brought a beautiful new meaning to it.
